Portrait: Brad WendesI’m a working-class theatre director and neurodivergent artist based in the East of England.
I’m drawn to work that feels alive to the world around us—whether that means helping a new play find its theatrical life or discovering what a familiar text can reveal afresh. I look for the tension between a story’s emotional truth and the theatrical possibilities of telling it.
People before plays.
I build rehearsal rooms where actors feel safe to be vulnerable and have a real voice in shaping the work. Through positivity, humour and play, I want us to surprise ourselves, take creative risks and discover what we can achieve together.
Background & training
My work moves between physically charged drama and playful, imagined worlds. Resilience, anger, hope and humour are recurring interests; each story calls for its own style and process.
I trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School (MA Drama Directing, 2023) and Guildford School of Acting (BA (Hons) Acting, First Class, 2016). I’m also an alum of the Mercury Theatre Directors Programme (2024–2025).
Building a creative community
I founded Stage Craft @, an artistic hub in Essex and Suffolk for training, networking and performance. The community brings artists together to learn, connect and develop their own work.
My work with Headgate Young Company and Stage Craft Young Company includes directing productions and supporting emerging theatre-makers. For The Trials in 2025, I worked as an associate director and mentor, supporting director Tyler Reuben Woodhouse’s vision.
